Quitting smoking lowers the risk for problems with the heart and circulatory system. Nicotine can cause the arteries in the extremities to constrict. ConsiderationsĬigarette smoking may alter the results of this test. This test may also be done to help assess the following conditions: ![]() Arterial occlusion from atherosclerosis.Venous reflux (blood flow going the wrong direction in veins).Spastic arterial disease (arterial contractions brought on by cold or emotion).Monitor arterial reconstruction and bypass graftsĪ normal result means the blood vessels show no signs of narrowing, clots, or closure, and the arteries have normal blood flow.Sometimes, arteriography and venography may be needed later. This test is done as the first step to look at arteries and veins. Some people may feel slight pain from the pressure. Sometimes, the person performing the test will need to press on the vein to make sure it does not have a clot. You will need to remove clothes from the arm or leg being examined. Blood pressure cuffs may be put around different parts of the body, including the thigh, calf, ankle, and different points along the arm. This device directs high-frequency sound waves to the artery or veins being tested. A water-soluble gel is placed on a handheld device called a transducer. ![]() The test is done in the ultrasound or radiology department, a hospital room, or in a peripheral vascular lab. I Would Like to Learn About: How the Test is Performed This test uses ultrasound to look at the blood flow in the large arteries and veins in the arms or legs. There is usually no need to restrict foods or fluids, or to make any special preparations before a Doppler ultrasound test. The test takes about 30 minutes and is painless. Then, a transducer (a hand-held instrument that transmits sound waves) is held against your skin while images of the blood vessels are recorded. A special gel is rubbed on the part of the body being tested to improve sound quality. What to expectĪ Doppler ultrasound test is usually done in a clinic. It is used to assess blood flow through the coronary arteries (the blood vessels supplying the heart), the carotid artery (the main artery in the neck), the major arteries in the arms and legs, or in the heart itself (echocardiography). It may be recommended for patients with atherosclerosis or coronary artery disease. It also lets them see and measure obstructions in arteries and measure the degree of narrowing or leakage of heart valves. Doppler ultrasound testing allows doctors to clearly see how blood flows through the heart and blood vessels. The returning sound waves (echoes) are picked up and turned into pictures showing blood flow through the arteries or the heart itself. Similar to an echocardiogram, a Doppler ultrasound (or Doppler echocardiography) is a test in which very high frequency sound waves are bounced off your heart and blood vessels.
